With Jesus, Like Jesus, For Jesus

Sunday Sampler

Welcome to the Sunday Sampler online! The course materials below were developed and presented during a six-week sampler class as a way to share an overview of the topics the Design Team felt were priority in a disciple's journey.  Each topic will be developed into a more in-depth series of classes and offered at Westwood over the next three years. Meanwhile, the handouts and PowerPoints are provided for your individual exploration. Sample all of them or just the one God leads you to.

Abide in Christ

When we by faith receive Jesus Christ, we become a new creation. This new creation is immersed into Christ by the Holy Spirit and becomes united with Him. We are in Him and He is in us. His character, power and authority dwell within us. As we rely upon and follow Him, His character emerges and becomes apparent to everyone around us. His love begins to touch others through our words and actions. This class discusses what it means to have Christ in us and us abiding in Him, and will also encourage each participant to experience this unity with Him on a deeper level of intimacy.

Believers are the Body of Christ. He is the Head and each of us are essential cells in the Body. The health of the Body depends on each "cell" living in relationship with each other. We are also called to develop healthy relationships with those outside of the Body that we might touch their lives with His love. Jesus modeled an amazing level of emotional maturity. He set high standards for building healthy relationships. This class helps people build relationship skills that Jesus modeled: setting and respecting boundaries, dealing with disagreement and conflict, honesty and transparency, listening, tough love, practicing unconditional acceptance.

Holy Spirit

Before Jesus was crucified, He promised His disciples that when He went away, He would send a Helper to be with us and in us. This Helper and Advocate is the Holy Spirit. This class looks at what the Bible teaches about the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit. The emphasis will be practical: Learning how the Spirit helps us become more like Jesus (transformation of our character) and how He empowers us to live as Jesus intends (an abundant life.)

Transformation/Spiritual Disciplines

Romans 12:2 instructs us not to be conformed to the patterns of this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. The Greek word that is here translated as "transformed" is "Metamorphos" from which we derive the English word metamorphosis. By allowing God to renew our minds, disciples of Jesus are transformed into his likeness. From the standpoint of character, we can change from being a self-absorbed caterpillar to a butterfly whose life revolves around Christ and touches the lives of others with His love. This class focuses on attitudes and actions that will renew our minds and transform our lives.

Jesus engaged in ministry and continues to do so through those who follow him. Participants in this class will learn about the joys and challenges of serving others in Jesus' name. We will discover that ministry is always relational, an expression of love, and done in the power of the Holy Spirit. Christ honoring ministry emerges from our weaknesses and pushes us out of our comfort zones. Disciples are always available to the Lord.

Spiritual Warfare

Spiritual warfare is inevitable in the life of a disciple. Satan wants to derail any attempts to follow Jesus and touch the lives of others in His name. When we seek to do God's will, we can expect opposition. This opposition often appears to be coming from people, and our tendency is to defend against them. Disciples must look deeper to the source of the opposition and deal with it there. James 4:7 tells us to "resist Satan and he will flee from you. . . . "  We will learn how to effectively resist him.
